Radiocarbon Detection / C14-SCAR for Pharma

C14-SCAR for Pharma

The natural ¹⁴C label can be artificially enriched (even by orders of magnitude) to mark drugs and track their metabolic pathways in human clinical trials.

The unprecedented C14-SCAR dynamic range can enable seamless measurements over more than 5 decades of radiocarbon concentration (0.1 – 100000 pMC).

Since only small  samples (urine, plasma, feces, etc.) are typically available, a specific, smaller volume model of the instrument,  named BIO-SCAR, has been developed for this kind of application.

Measurement process explained

C14-SCAR for Pharma is able to continuously measure previously treated biological samples, the measurement phase is divided into two steps:

1. Loading the sample set and burning

To enable fast analysis, a set of samples can be placed in a loader for automated measurement.
The sample set is sent to an elemental analyser (EA) which performs the burn. The output of the EA is a stream of a mixture of CO2 and He (carrier gas).

2. Purification and measurement

The output of the EA is trapped and purified inside C14-SCAR and transferred to the measuring cell.
When the measuring cell has been filled to the correct pressure, the Saturated CAvity Ring-down process begins and measurements are taken.
The analysis result is provided automatically after the measurement.

Performances

14C-SCAR for Pharma  achieves excellent sensitivity at low measurement times, has a very wide dynamic range, about 4 decades, and requires a low amount of sample to operate.

With measurement times in the order of 120min 14C-SCAR achieves sub-pmc accuracies.
